Reading regional retention signals
How to tell a durable product pattern from a temporary fluctuation in a local cohort.
A lower retention rate in one market is a prompt to investigate, not a diagnosis. Reliable interpretation starts by checking cohort composition and product context.
Compare like with like
Align install week, acquisition source, app version and meaningful user intent. A national average is rarely the fairest benchmark for a region with a very different channel mix.
Look for repeated shape
One week may be noise. Repeated divergence at the same lifecycle moment is stronger evidence, especially when qualitative feedback points to the same friction.
Turn the signal into a test
Choose one plausible mechanism, one target segment and one measurable outcome. A small regional experiment is usually more informative than a broad redesign based on correlation.
